About

We build systems from the ground up

Day Zero Labs runs online cohort courses and consulting in AI and software engineering. We also publish technical insights and a plain-language glossary of technical terms, starting with AI.

How we work

We build systems from the ground up, and we stay close to the codebase because that’s where we actually learn things. We are software architects who never stopped being engineers, so we try to hold both ends at once: the high-level design and the messy, production-ready details underneath it. Most of our time goes into cloud topologies that don’t fall over, data models that don’t need three diagrams to explain, and code we’re not embarrassed to reread six months later. We’ve found that the decisions worth trusting usually come from people still writing and maintaining the thing, not just sketching it and walking away. That’s a bias, not a law.

We try to be pragmatic about new technology, especially AI and cloud infrastructure, mostly because we’ve been burned by hype before. The industry moves fast and talks faster, so we’d rather see what holds up under a real workload than take anyone’s word for it, including our own. Whether we’re wiring agentic AI into a development workflow, going through a network security setup line by line, or testing a reasoning model to see where it breaks, we let the telemetry and the trade-offs do the talking. If something doesn’t earn its keep in clarity, speed or time saved, we drop it. We get this wrong sometimes, and we’d rather be corrected than stay confident.

Engineering, to us, is a long process of noticing what’s clunky and fixing it: workflows, edge cases, and the small frictions nobody budgets time for.

What we offer

Courses. Online cohort courses in AI and software engineering, where a group starts on the same day and works through the material together. No course is open yet; get notified when one opens.

Consulting. We help teams with software and cloud architecture, data models, bringing AI into engineering workflows and network security reviews. Ask us about your project.

Insights and glossary. Our insights are a working log: things we have actually built and broken, patterns that held up, and the occasional dead end we leave in for honesty’s sake. The glossary explains technical terms in plain language, starting with AI.
